Activities | Art Appreciation

Understanding

The group was founded to increase our knowledge of the visual arts, particularly to give us an insight into areas of which we have little information.

We go to talks and tours of the galleries and broaden our knowledge of all types of painting, drawing and sculpture.

Analysis

Members of the group have also given presentations on the artist they particularly like. Members, who wish to, are also picking a Scottish artist to research and inform the rest of the group about their chosen artist. We try to look at different types of artwork and eras to take us outside our comfort zone. .

Pleasure of art

Art Appreciation is the knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art. The more you appreciate and understand the art of different eras, movements, styles and techniques, the better you can develop, evaluate and improve your own artwork.

Group Leader's Comments

"We are extremely lucky to have the world class galleries in Edinburgh and Glasgow only a short journey away. Among the visits we have had tours of the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, attended short lectures at the National Gallery Edinburgh and been to Jupiter Artland near Livingston. Anyone interested in the visual arts is welcome to join us regardless of their level of knowledge."
