Lanark has a population of approximately 8,500 and it is packed with many interesting alleyways and visitor venues that were created centuries ago. Lanark has served as an important market town since medieval times, and was made a Royal Burgh in 1140, so it has many centuries of history and development.
It has William Wallace (Braveheart) among its celebrity characters. In May 1297 Wallace attacked the town of Lanark, killing the English sheriff and unrest quickly became full-blown rebellion. Men flocked to join Wallace and he began to drive the English out of Fife and Perthshire.
Every year there is a town Festival called Lanimers which takes over the High Street with decorated floats, events, and presentations. Lanimer Day falls on the Thursday between the 6th and 12th June
